Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.
Global terrorist designation and prosecution case
Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.
Authorities in Germany state the network was responsible for attacks on sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.
Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.
Trial details and international connections
The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.
Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the identical event in 2023.
Historical background and group hierarchy
The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.
Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.
Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.
Prior legal cases and global responses
A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.
America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.
Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.
“The threat from the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
