Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the ability to question certain calls made by the chair umpire, following the system already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
